As the march to the postseason continues,  so does the additions for the Vegas Golden Knights who announced another two trades including arguably the biggest acquisition in team history – young power forward Jake Virtanen.

Virtanen, 23, brings a special mix of speed and physicality to the Knights top line. He was acquired from Buffalo for this years first round pick, 2 third round picks, Noah Gregor and Darren Archibald.

Pushed down the Sabres depth chart and most recently in Rochester of the AHL, Virtanen has managed only 3 goals on the season but should see plenty of opportunity in Vegas.

“It’s a high price to pay but Jake is a special player. You don’t see the combination of speed and size that he brings too often and when there’s a player that young and that unique you have to pay to get him,” said team President Dana White.

“I’m excited to be here,” added Virtanen. “Vegas showed a lot of confidence in me and is going to give me a big opportunity to show that I can be a major cog for a few years.”

Virtanen joins teenage rookie Andrei Svechnikov as building blocks on the right wing, with 25 year old Jonathan Drouin on the left side. Just 2 years into existence and with a number of good young defensive prospects, the top 6 is starting to form.

The Knights also acquired defenseman Adam Pelech from Anaheim for cash considerations.

White added, “Adam is a guy who can play tough minutes against teams top lines and pick up some special teams time for us as wel . At 25 we think hes just starting to hit his stride.”

Vegas also cleared out their log jam of goalies sending Cam Ward to Columbus and Jimmy Howard to Ottawa, both for cash considerations.

Howard will have a special place in the hearts of Knights fans after carrying the team to the playoffs in their inaugural season. He was unseated as started by the recently acquired Devin Dubnyk.
