New Jersey made a semi big move yesterday acquiring Eric Staal and 2 draft picks for Craig Smith. Eric Staal is an upgrade over Craig Smith but has only 1 year left on his deal compared to the 3 years left on Smith’s deal. Staal has the same SC and PC but brings in a higher SP, PA, DF, LD and EX. Staal overall is a more veteran two-way presence than Smith and overall fits the Devils style of play more so than Smith did and the Devils pride themselves in their two-way ability. Rumour has it the Devils are not done yet however, they have been linked to multiple forwards that have been let known to the league are available and a couple that aren’t made known to be readily available. It’s been also rumoured that they have looked at getting another top 4 calibre d-man. With around 3.9M in cap space the Devils can acquire a couple of solid players or make a significant upgrade. The Devils are looking to go all in this year so no one should be overly surprised if the Devils make a huge move to acquire another star to go along with their core of Bergeron, Price, Burns, Chabot, Giordano, Yandle and Radulov.
